Close a case with a named counterpart
Develop a case, then close its local account with a brief comparison that names a counterpart and contrasts their treatment or consequences; repeat that closing role across otherwise separate cases.
Useful when developed cases need a short explicit comparative close before the argument moves to another account.
Changing a repeated case boundary can clarify how many local accounts contribute to a larger argument without repeating the whole thesis.
It assigns separate jobs to developing a case and closing it with a named counterpart’s treatment or consequence; mere thesis repetition or a nearby comparison does not meet the rule.
The local account and its comparative close do different work: one develops the case, while the short return states why it belongs in the argument. Repeating that closing role can connect cases of different lengths and subjects without restating the whole thesis each time.

It Didn't Start with Watergate
Victor Lasky · 23 weeksA counterpart frames and closes the local comparison
SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT“Colson went to jail.”
The paragraph introduces Colson’s later plea, describes the publicity Lasky attributes to Robert Kennedy’s campaign against Hoffa, then returns to Colson’s punishment in its final sentence. The counterpart frames and closes the local comparison.
The return to Colson’s punishment states the argumentative job of the preceding publicity account. Its placement before the move to Roy Cohn gives a local case an explicit comparison at the close, even though the counterpart has already been introduced.

It Didn't Start with Watergate
Victor Lasky · 23 weeksA chapter closes with a conditional comparison
After recounting allegations against Kissinger and selected expressions of support, Lasky closes with Davidson’s conditional question: if an exception is made for Kissinger, should Nixon’s foreign-policy achievements earn similar treatment? The question supplies the comparative close without establishing that a rule was actually waived.
The final question returns an extended Kissinger account to Nixon by naming the counterpart and the proposed basis for similar treatment. Its closing position makes the connection explicit; its conditional wording leaves the claimed exception as an argument to examine.

It Didn't Start with Watergate
Victor Lasky · 23 weeksA chapter closes on two outcomes and a stated difference
SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT“Not as lucky as Strauss”
After describing a change in the limitations period and Strauss’s account of receiving funds, the chapter closes by bringing in Stans’s guilty plea and fine, followed by Strauss’s continuing party role. The text itself says Stans could not use the same limitations protection.
Stans enters the final paragraph as Strauss’s named counterpart, and the account closes by contrasting a plea and fine with a continuing party role. The expressly different limitations position also shows why an explicit comparative close can remain an unsupported equivalence rather than a complete explanation.
Make the decision
deliberately.
Useful when a history or institutional argument develops many separate cases whose contribution to a larger comparison might otherwise remain implicit.
- Mark the end of a developed case and identify the treatment or consequence that the local account supports comparing.
- Write a brief closing sentence, paragraph or question that names the counterpart and makes that specific comparison explicit. The counterpart may already have appeared earlier.
- Repeat that closing role where it serves the argument; do not force it onto every case or chapter. State relevant differences or uncertainty so the closing contrast does not imply equivalence it has not established.
A near miss
Repeat the book’s accusation after an anecdote without an identifiable counterpart and treatment or consequence comparison, or mention a counterpart earlier but give the case only an ordinary narrative ending.
Where the lesson stops
The repeated feature is the position and job of the comparative close, not a stable pair, measurement scale or proven equality of circumstances. Lasky shifts among publicity, punishment, achievement-based exceptions and statutory position, often without establishing comparable conduct or responsibility. The instruction to state relevant differences is an editorial safeguard; these examples do not consistently demonstrate a fair comparison method.
This is an editorial reading of craft. These examples do not establish that the practice caused, or predicts, a longer bestseller run.
