The final return changes the question from keeping the bird alive during siege to what remains available to care for afterward. Its position helps complete the foreword’s promise to make the event legible through ordinary lives.
The source in context.
The Soviet attack, German command breakdown and civilian experience unfold through intercut strands. After the surrender and the resolution of several military threads, the narrative closes with the recovered stork and Ilse Antz emerging into daylight.
