Hold a scene open while its context changes the next move
Suspend an unresolved action, develop context directly relevant to its stakes or available choices, then explicitly return to the same moment and show the next decision or movement.
For narrative encounters that need substantial background before the pending action can be understood.
The same unresolved moment gives the excursion a purpose and supplies a clear point of return.
Beyond weaving in research, keep action pending, develop relevant context and explicitly resume the same moment with its decision still visible.
Background gains a concrete job when the reader is holding an unresolved situation in mind. In the bear passage, natural history and competing positions complicate both danger and reverence before the group chooses another route.

Coming into the Country
John McPhee · 20 weeksThe bear keeps grazing while the context expands
SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT“all of these things went through my mind”
A bear blocks the intended route and the narrator asks what would happen if it came too close. The prose suspends the walk for behavior, uncertainty and competing attitudes toward carrying a gun, then explicitly brings those thoughts back to the still-grazing animal. The party changes direction after another qualified response from Fedeler.
The reader carries a pending practical question through the exposition. The return matters because the context has complicated the encounter rather than provided a single safe formula; the renewed action is a route choice under uncertainty.
Make the decision
deliberately.
Narrative nonfiction needs substantial explanation inside an encounter whose next action is still pending.
- Establish the immediate situation and the unresolved practical question.
- Select context that changes the grounds for understanding the risk, value or available choices.
- Signal the return to the same moment, then let the next action show what remains unresolved.
- Attribute competing claims and preserve their limits rather than using the pause to install a false certainty.
A near miss
An unrelated research interlude, or a flashback that eventually catches up chronologically without changing the grounds of the pending action.
Where the lesson stops
The contextual excursion does not settle all the uncertainty. The passage includes attributed and unverified wildlife claims; it is not a safety lesson, and its narrated thoughts are not a transcript of cognition in real time.
This is an editorial reading of craft. These examples do not establish that the practice caused, or predicts, a longer bestseller run.
