During a stated pause in the main action, move through short updates to the established social world, then return to the central thread when a specific development changes its situation.
For a reported story with long central delays and a surrounding world important enough to follow independently.
Concurrent updates can carry elapsed time and preserve the larger subject while a clear development signals the return to the central thread.
Beyond adding subplots, bracket the montage with the reason for the pause and the event that ends it, selecting updates that change the ensemble.
A long period of imprisonment need not become an empty gap or a sequence of repetitive procedural updates. The local vignettes keep the city’s other lives active, and the later reversal makes the return to Williams legible. This is an interpretation of narrative function, not a measured effect on attention.

The montage relies on an ensemble already worth following. Its account of civic attitudes is selective, and quick transitions can make rumor, attributed experience and authorial generalization seem equally established.
