Application and continued use

Show the document that performs the advice

Move from a general recommendation to an example of the actual request, script, or form used to execute it.

WHEN IT FITS

Consider this when advice depends on choices hidden inside the wording or format of a request, script, or document.

POTENTIAL LEVERAGE

Showing the actual artifact exposes the small decisions through which a broad recommendation becomes an action.

BEYOND THE FAMILIAR ADVICE

Beyond including actionable tips, reveal the recipient, information, criteria, and response format needed to perform the advice.

NOTICE THE DECISION

A reader can see the hidden decisions inside the action: recipients, specifications, comparison criteria, and response format. The advice becomes inspectable rather than remaining an attractive abstraction.

Stuart asks dealers for comparable quotations

SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT
“RE: Request for Quotation”
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK

Mark Stuart sends six dealers a fax specifying a vehicle, transaction conditions, and the components required in a written quotation. The authors reproduce the request after describing the time cost of visiting dealers; their account says three managers promptly respond.

THE AUTHOR’S DECISION

The artifact shows how a broad aim—compare offers—becomes a set of operational choices. In particular, requesting itemized charges and a common response channel makes the method legible to the reader.

The record-keeping instruction becomes an incident log

SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT
“with names, dates, and witnesses”
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK

After recommending a detailed record, Carlson provides illustrative dated entries that identify events, people present and a response from a supervisor. The surrounding discussion connects this record to supporting materials and the practical problem of retaining access to them.

THE AUTHOR’S DECISION

The sample shows what specificity looks like at the level of an entry. Instead of leaving the reader to invent the format, the book makes the decisions about dates, observed behavior and possible witnesses visible.

A fictional complaint letter reveals the choices inside the advice

SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT
“The language matters.”
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK

Carlson introduces a sample addressed to a fictional employer, labels the complaint explicitly and supplies a chronological account with references to attachments. The letter ends by asking for an investigation; the following discussion returns to uncertainty and possible adverse responses.

THE AUTHOR’S DECISION

The reader can inspect the difference between expressing distress and producing the particular document the chapter describes. Labeling, sequence, corroborating materials and the requested action become visible parts of the advice.

An amended mission statement gives the recommendation exact words

SHORT SOURCE EXCERPT
“intellectual, ideological, or political”
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BOOK

Horowitz introduces a diversity statement credited to Yale, presents it with additional categories, and then explicitly identifies those categories as his additions. He proposes that a legislative committee chair ask university presidents to insert the words, seek commitments and review subsequent progress. The wording is a proposed instrument inside a larger reform argument.

THE AUTHOR’S DECISION

The author makes several otherwise hidden decisions visible: the location of the edit, the words to insert, the requester and recipient, and the intended follow-up. Readers can assess the precise proposal. Its relationship to the attributed original depends on the explanation after the displayed statement, which is especially important when typographic emphasis is unavailable.

USE IT

Make the decision
deliberately.

A procedural explanation where wording and format materially affect what happens next.

  1. Establish the problem that the artifact solves before showing it.
  2. Include the fields that let someone adapt the procedure to another situation.
  3. Explain which parts are enduring decisions and which depend on a particular technology or market.

A near miss

A decorative document excerpt, or an instruction to shop around without revealing what information to request.

Where the lesson stops

The book reports one friend’s experience with six dealers and three immediate responses. It does not demonstrate that the procedure reliably secures the best deal, and the fax format is historical.

This is an editorial reading of craft. These examples do not establish that the practice caused, or predicts, a longer bestseller run.
