THE WORK BEHIND THE BOOKS

From the author’s account.

Incredible Victory

In his acknowledgments, Lord describes collecting American and Japanese recollections, receiving contemporary letters and journals, using archives and checking disagreements. He says Morison’s account prompted his wish to write a full book about Midway. These are the author’s accounts of his method and motivation, rather than independent confirmation of the scenes or conclusions.

Acknowledgments: reporting method, archival sources and the stated influence of Morison’s history. · lines 3747–3769
