Between the World and Me

The supplied 2015 biographical note identifies Coates as a correspondent for The Atlantic and the author of The Beautiful Struggle, and lists journalism awards associated with his work. Within the book he also describes writing as part of the education and questioning he recounts to his son.

We Were Eight Years in Power

Coates says he wanted to collect eight Atlantic articles while making something new from them. He describes the preceding Notes as a loose memoir of why he was writing and where he was in his life, and calls the essays a record of thinking that continues during the introduction’s composition.
