The explanatory note describes Dubner’s 2003 magazine assignment to profile Levitt and their later decision to write together. It presents the collaboration as a meeting between Levitt’s research questions and Dubner’s reporting and writing. The revised preface describes moving excerpts from that profile out of the chapter openings and into the bonus material.
